2027 Emergency Medicine Registrar

Job Description

Western Health is looking for Emergency Registrars to join one of Melbourne’s largest and fastest growing health services, serving a diverse, multicultural and multilingual community across the rapidly expanding western suburbs of Melbourne.

A major recent development is the opening of the newly opened New Footscray Hospital; a $1.5 billion tertiary teaching hospital and one of Victoria’s newest major health infrastructure projects. With more than 500 beds and expanded specialist services, the New Footscray Hospital represents a major investment in healthcare, education and training in Melbourne’s west.

The Emergency Registrar position offers an exciting opportunity to work across both Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals as part of a highly supportive and well-established Emergency Medicine team. Registrars are expected to rotate between both campuses during their employment.

Both Emergency Departments are accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) as Non-Major Referral Sites for 36 months of training. Together, the departments manage more than 140,000 patient presentations annually and provide exposure to a broad and diverse case mix across two busy tertiary teaching hospitals.

Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department currently manages over 100,000 presentations annually, including more than 28,000 paediatric presentations within a dedicated paediatric emergency area. Emergency obstetric and gynaecological presentations are also predominantly managed at this campus. The department features 4 resuscitation bays, 15 fast-track bays, a 6-bed Mental Health and Alcohol & Drugs Hub, and a Behavioural Assessment Unit.

Footscray Hospital Emergency Department manages more than 50,000 adult patient presentations annually within the new tertiary hospital environment. The department features 5 resuscitation bays, 6 fast-track bays, an 8-bed Mental Health and Alcohol & Drugs Hub (from mid-2026), and more than 50 acute and short-stay beds.

Both departments are supported by active on-floor consultant leadership, supervision and teaching from 07:30 to 24:00 hours, seven days per week. Western Health has a highly regarded education program with excellent primary and fellowship examination success rates, regular bedside teaching, simulation, and structured exam preparation programs.

The Emergency Departments employ over 200 medical staff, including more than 60 ACEM trainees. ACEM Associateship in Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program (FEMTP) candidates are well supported. There are also opportunities for trainees undertaking the Intermediate or Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Programs (IEMTP and AEMTP). Western Health has an active research and academic culture, supported through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research, with opportunities in research, quality improvement, simulation and medical education.
