Western Health is one of Victoria’s largest health services, comprising three acute public hospitals: Footscray Hospital, Sunshine Hospital (including the newly opened Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital) and Williamstown Hospital. Our teaching hospitals are affiliated with the University of Melbourne School of Medicine, and the University of Notre Dame School of Medicine.
We provide care to a population of approximately one million people in Melbourne’s west.
Our services range from acute tertiary services in emergency medicine, intensive care, medical and surgical services, subacute care and specialist ambulatory clinics, and maternity and paediatric services. We also operate the Sunbury Day Hospital, drug health services and a wide range of community services.
It’s a time of exciting growth at Western Health, with the $1.5 Billion new Footscray Hospital project underway and the new facility due to open in 2025. The Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department is also expanding and in 2021 will be three times the size of the current department. With the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital we are on track to become the state’s second largest maternity hospital this year.
Both Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital have Emergency Departments accredited for Emergency medicine training by ACEM with a combined patient census of over 110 000. Sunshine ED is also accredted for Paediatric EM training.
