The Emergency Department at University Hospital Geelong sees close to 84,000 patients per year with 30% of presentations being paediatric via our newly delivered dedicated Children’s Emergency Department.

With access to all major specialties except Neurosurgery and Transplant Medicine, the variety and acuity of conditions treated ensures a stimulating work environment. Our geographic location results in high exposure to trauma cases, marine and land based toxinology and medical outreach to more peripheral centres.

Your Training Experience

  • 36 months accredited ED time as an ACEM trainee – we are a Tier 1 site and classified as Major Referral 

  • Accredited for Training Stage 4 in the revised ACEM training program 
  • Flexible rostering, full time and part time working arrangements are available 

  • Weekly in house echo teaching with an echocardiographer  

  • Shifts allocated across both Adult and Children’s Emergency Departments  

  • Accredited for Paediatric logbook 

  • Accredited Emergency Medicine Education Registrar EMER position 
    • 6 month placement 0.5 FTE Non-Clinical and 0.5 Clinical 
    • Weekly in situ sim 

    • On the floor teaching 

    • Supervision and feedback to JMS

  • Specialist Training Placement at Colac Area Health – classified as non-ED time (ACEM trainee only) 

    • 6 month placement 

    • 2 days per week in Urgent Care Centre 

    • 1.5 days per week of anaesthetics with GP anaesthetist 

    • 0.5 days per week performing safety and quality activities 

    • Protected time to attend weekly registrar teaching at UHG 

    • NO night shift, evenings or weekends 

    • Accommodation available

  • Newly accredited role - Medical Administration, Safety and Quality SSP  

    • 6 month placement 0.5 FTE Non-Clinical and 0.5 Clinical 

  • Advanced Training Network rotations to Warrnambool and Ballarat with Free Accommodation available 

  • Optional Secondment to Alice Springs ED 

  • 3 or 6 month rotations in: 

    • ICU, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology 

  • 5 hours paid and protected teaching time per week 

  • Annual success in primary and fellowship examinations owing to longstanding robust preparation programs 

  • Research opportunities to fulfil trainee research requirement or to pursue academic interest 

  • Optional allocation of a mentor 

  • Allocation of a supervisor for mid and end of term feedback, whether on the ACEM training program or not 

  • Access to FEMTP/IEMTP/AEMTP programs with high completion rate owing to the organisation by our Program Support Office and easy access to supervisors 

  • Linked accreditation if working at either of the Private Hospitals (St John of God, Epworth Geelong) which involves access to the teaching program at University Hospital Geelong

Work in an incredibly diverse team, Emergency Department Registrars may be: 

  • Training to be a FACEM

  • Upskilling in critical care and procedural skills to work in more rural and remote settings 

  • Training to be a GP and keen to do some extended skills time in Emergency Medicine

  • Keen to complete the Emergency Medicine Certificate and/or Associateship programs
