ACEM Trainee Experience
As an ACEM trainee in HNE, you will gain broad hands-on clinical experience and be part of a supportive, progressive training network committed to growing the next generation of Emergency Physicians.
All trainees benefit from a well-organised, district-wide training program ensuring continuity, progression, and exposure across all key domains of emergency medicine. The program includes two dedicated Trainee Procedures Days held annually, providing focused learning opportunities and skill refinement, Annual Trainee Conference, fostering professional networking, knowledge sharing, and updates on best practices. As trainees advance, they receive tailored transitioning support toward FACEM support, and career planning assistance. This comprehensive approach ensures that each trainee is fully supported throughout their training journey, promoting successful progression to independent emergency medicine practice.
Strong Educational Support: Dedicated resources and guidance are provided for all stages of ACEM exams, including Primary, Fellowship written, and OSCE preparation.

Special Skills Terms broaden your experience through rotations in Ultrasound, Medical Education, Intensive Care, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics (ward-based), and Paediatric Emergency Medicine, enhancing your skills beyond core emergency practice. In the later stages of training, gain valuable exposure to Retrieval Medicine, developing advanced competencies in the critical transfer and management of patients across healthcare settings.

Hunter New England Health Emergency Medicine Network 4 has a dynamic and diverse range of both metro and rural sites which include: John Hunter Hospital, Maitland Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital, with the option to be allocated to both Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Manning Base Hospital. These sites offer fantastic experiences in Emergency Medicine and speciality terms for our ACEM Trainees.
John Hunter Hospital is one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australia with Trauma and Retrieval focused presentations. Should you only require Tertiary time for your Training, this can be facilitated within the Network at John Hunter Hospital.
