Full Time Opportunity: 0.5 EFT Director | 0.5 EFT Clinical Emergency Medicine Specialist

Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS) is seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine Specialist to join our senior leadership team as Director, Emergency Department.

This senior role combines departmental leadership with ongoing clinical practice, offering the successful candidate the ability to shape emergency care across East Gippsland while maintaining your emergency medicine skills in a supportive and progressive regional health service.

The Emergency Department

The BRHS Emergency Department is a dynamic regional service providing emergency and trauma care to a large, growing East Gippsland community. As the only Emergency Department between Sale and Bega, the service plays a critical role in delivering high-quality emergency care across a large regional catchment.

The department manages approximately 22,800 presentations annually and includes 9 treatment cubicles, incorporating resuscitation and fast‑track areas, plus a 5‑bed Short Stay Unit. The department is staffed by Emergency Medicine Senior Medical Officers with overnight on‑call support, and maintains strong relationships with regional referral hospitals and other specialist services.

BRHS is accredited for Advanced Skills Training in Emergency Medicine with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM).

About the Role

The Director, Emergency Department is responsible for:

  • Providing clinical, operational and strategic leadership for the Emergency Department
  • Delivering high‑quality, patient-centred emergency care as a practising clinician
  • Leading workforce planning, clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
  • Overseeing recruitment and departmental performance
  • Providing advice to the Chief Medical Officer regarding the suitability of Emergency Medicine Senior Medical Staff, including locums, for credentialing and privileging at BRHS
  • Supporting education, supervision and mentoring of doctors in training and students
  • Working collaboratively with medical and nursing executive, as well as with external stakeholders
  • Promoting a positive team culture that is focused on wellbeing, learning and continuous improvement

What You Bring

You will be an experienced Emergency Medicine Specialist with:

  • FACEM, FACRRM or an equivalent specialist qualification
  • Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in emergency medicine
  • Experience in clinical governance, workforce leadership and service improvement
  • Strong clinical skills and a commitment to patient centred care
  • Commitment to the education and professional development of doctors in training and students
  • Interest in rural and regional emergency medicine and service innovation
