Emergency Medicine Registrars | 2027 Clinical Year | New Zealand
Cross the ditch for a better rhythm of life.
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is inviting Australian-trained Emergency Medicine Registrars to join us for the 2027 training year. If you're looking to trade high-pressure rosters for a system that values your time, your clinical autonomy, and your life outside the hospital, New Zealand is ready for you.
Why Australian Registrars are Moving to NZ
- Contracted for Balance: Enjoy 6 weeks of annual leave plus 12 public holidays. Our rosters are designed to ensure you actually have the energy to hike, ski, or surf the landscapes you've been eyeing.
- A Familiar, Supportive System: You'll find clinical standards and a collegiate culture very similar to home, but with a focus on clinical autonomy and a less adversarial practice environment thanks to our "no-fault" (ACC) system.
- A Seamless Step for your Career: Moving across the Tasman as a Registrar is a simple lateral move. Because our health systems and vocational training requirements are closely aligned, your clinical time in New Zealand counts fully toward your experience and career seniority.
- Financial Certainty: Say goodbye to chasing un-rostered overtime. Our Run Category system means your rostered nights and weekends are already built into a transparent, predictable salary, offering you clear financial certainty from day one.
- Practice with Confidence: Leave the stress of defensive medicine behind. New Zealand's unique "no-fault" ACC system provides comprehensive cover for patient injuries without the need to prove negligence, allowing you to focus on high-quality patient care in a supportive, non-litigious culture.
- Choose Your Pace: From the tertiary hubs of Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch to the hands-on experience and close-knit communities of our regional districts, we have roles to fit every career goal.
The "Trans-Tasman" Advantage
Moving to New Zealand is often easier than moving between Australian states:
- Registration Simplicity: Australian-trained doctors follow our most streamlined registration path. If you've completed your internship, the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMRA) pathway makes the move seamless with minimal paperwork.
- Immediate Rights: As an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you have the immediate right to live and work in New Zealand, accessing domestic rates for services, health, and schooling from day one.
- Direct Path to Residency: For those looking long-term, doctors are on Tier 1 of Immigration NZ's Green List, offering a "Straight to Residence" pathway that secures your future in New Zealand.
A Competitive Global Package
- Inclusive Salaries: Registrar salaries are competitive and structured for simplicity. Your total salary is based on your run category - no more timesheet fatigue.
- Full Support: We provide employer pension contributions (6% if eligible), cover your professional indemnity insurance, and may offer dedicated relocation assistance to help you get across the Tasman.
- Professional Growth: Access protected teaching time, dedicated study/exam leave, and dedicated funding for your continuing education.
Key Requirements
- Grade: Registrars
- Experience: Preferably six months in Emergency Medicine runs (Paediatric Emergency Medicine is counted), and a minimum of 2 years clinical experience in a competent/comparable healthcare system.
- Registration: Eligible for MCNZ registration.
- Commitment: Available for a mid-January 2027 start.
