ED Registrar TS1 - TS4: Maitland Hospital

Job Description

Emergency Medicine Registrar – Maitland Hospital

Growing Community. Expanding Opportunities.

Welcome to Maitland Hospital - one of the newest and fastest-growing hospitals in NSW, where exceptional training meets a growing community. Brand new and purpose-built, Maitland Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility serving a rapidly expanding community. Our modern Emergency Department offers a rare blend of high clinical volume, strong consultant support, and a metro-rural case mix that provides an excellent environment for learning, teamwork, and career growth. Our goal is to train confident, capable emergency medicine clinicians.

As a Tier 2 regional referral hospital and a key site in ACEM’s NSW Accredited Training Network (ATN) pilot, Maitland is not just a great place to train – it’s shaping the future of emergency medicine training in Australia.

Just 30 minutes from Newcastle’s beautiful beaches, and moments from the award-winning Hunter Valley vineyards and restaurants, Maitland delivers lifestyle and learning in equal measure.

An ideal site for every stage of your FACEM training experience.

Maitland offers a vibrant, rewarding training environment; the ideal site to develop and hone your Emergency Medicine skills no matter what your stage of training. With its mix of high-volume presentations, excellent consultant availability, and broad clinical exposure, Maitland ED delivers a rich learning environment that supports growth and development of clinicians at every stage of FACEM training.

Trainees experience everything from metropolitan-style acuity to true rural medicine, gaining confidence across the full spectrum of emergency care provision. This diversity is matched by a strongly supportive culture; approachable senior clinicians committed to high-quality supervision, team-based decision-making and a genuine commitment to trainee wellbeing underpin the departments daily practice.

Innovation is one of Maitland Emergency Department’s defining strengths. The department is known for innovation, problem solving, and forward-thinking services design, with several models now shaping statewide practice. The highly functional ESSU has informed the NSW Model of Care, while the Generalist Emergency Nurse Practitioner program has become a benchmark for NP development across the state. An integrated Mental Health Nurse Practitioner model - led by highly skilled clinicians embedded in the ED – provides both exceptional patient support and valuable education for doctors.

Education is a core focus at Maitland. Trainees can expect structured teaching, protected learning time, regular simulation, direct bedside coaching and meaningful opportunities for skill development and advancement. Supervisors are invested, enthusiastic, and committed to helping trainees build capability, clinical judgement and professional identity.

As part of the Accredited Training Network, you’ll also have access to a wide range of specialty experiences, including Toxicology, Intensive Care Medicine, Pre-Hospital Retrieval, Anaesthetics, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, and Paediatric inpatient medicine. Rotations available across multiple sites, including John Hunter, Tamworth, Calvary Mater, Port Macquarie and Belmont, will expand your clinical exposure and support your development to become a well-rounded FACEM.

Whether you’re consolidating foundational skills or preparing for fellowship-level responsibilities, Maitland provides the learning, support, innovation and variety you need to progress confidently through your FACEM training journey.
