What if your emergency medicine expertise could reach a patient before they ever reach the ED?

Emergency Consult is looking for vocationally registered Emergency Physicians and late-stage ACEM trainees with New Zealand registration who are interested in using telehealth to extend the reach of emergency medicine.

This is an opportunity to use your emergency medicine experience in a different way – supporting patients and frontline clinicians across a wide variety of settings, from emergency departments and urgent care clinics to ambulances and patients' homes.

About Emergency Consult

Emergency Consult is a 24/7 New Zealand telehealth service providing acute and urgent clinical care to patients across Aotearoa.

We support patients every day in a range of environments, including locations where access to experienced emergency clinicians can be limited.

Telehealth won't replace the need for emergency departments, urgent care services or local clinicians. But it can provide another layer of clinical expertise, helping patients and healthcare teams make informed decisions about assessment, management, escalation and referral and reduce pressure on physical facilities.

We are particularly passionate about improving access to healthcare for people living in rural and regional communities with poorer access to healthcare.

The opportunity

As part of our clinical team, you may be supporting:

• Patients presenting with urgent or acute medical concerns
• Patients being assessed within emergency departments (or who have been sent away with a voucher to contact us)
• Patients attending urgent care clinics
• Patients being managed by ambulance teams
• Patients in their own homes
• Healthcare professionals seeking additional clinical input

You'll use your emergency medicine experience to undertake remote assessment, clinical decision-making and management, while working collaboratively with the clinician or healthcare team physically with the patient where applicable.

The role offers considerable clinical variety and the opportunity to think differently about how emergency medicine expertise can be delivered.

We are looking for

We are interested in hearing from:

• FACEMs with current New Zealand registration
• Other specialist Emergency Physicians with relevant New Zealand registration and experience
• Late-stage ACEM trainees (post Fellowship exam but with time to finish training)
• Clinicians with strong emergency medicine experience and clinical judgement
• Doctors who understand the opportunities and limitations of telehealth
• Clinicians who are confident making decisions with information gathered virtually
• Doctors who communicate exceptionally well with both patients and healthcare professionals

Experience in telehealth is desirable, but a willingness to embrace a different model of clinical care is just as important.

Build clinical shifts around your existing commitments, ED work, family or lifestyle  – our minimum requirement is one 4-6 hour shift per week – the majority of our clinicians work in-person jobs and part time telehealth for EC.
