Alice Springs Hospital has a unique opportunity for ACEM registrars to undertake a special skills post in Aboriginal Health as part of an ED Care Coordination Team.  Working with a Social Emergency Medicine lens you will engage in a bicultural model of working and learning – alongside an Aboriginal ED Care Coordinator and an Aboriginal Health Practitioner. The team’s model of bringing medical, cultural and social expertise together, allows you to really understand the drivers behind your patients’ presentations, and assist from a strengths-based approach.  The ED Care Coordination team provides case coordination for a group of the EDs most vulnerable Aboriginal frequent attenders.  Drivers of presentations include many of the social determinants of health including homelessness, chronic medical conditions, mental illness, alcohol and other drugs, cognitive impairment (often from repeated trauma), domestic violence, displacement and poverty.
