The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency and Trauma Centre (RBWH ETC) is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic TS3 or TS4 Emergency Medicine trainee to join our team from February 2027. This position is available for 6 to 12 months, with flexible and negotiable working hours available to suit individual training and personal requirements.
This role offers an outstanding opportunity for senior Emergency Medicine trainees who are looking to consolidate their clinical skills, prepare for Fellowship, and develop the confidence and experience required to transition into a consultant role.
RBWH is one of Queensland’s leading tertiary referral hospitals and is recognised as a Level 1 Trauma Centre, providing care for some of the most complex and critically unwell patients in the state. Located in the heart of Brisbane, the Emergency and Trauma Centre manages approximately 90,000 patient presentations each year, exposing trainees to a diverse and challenging case mix that spans major trauma, critical illness, complex medical presentations, surgical emergencies and specialty referrals.
Our model of care places a strong emphasis on early senior decision-making and referral. Trainees are encouraged to think about shift management and flow as well as individual patient care. This approach not only supports high-quality patient care but also creates an ideal learning environment for trainees to progress toward independent specialist practice.
For trainees approaching the latter stages of their Emergency Medicine training, the breadth of clinical exposure available at RBWH ETC provides excellent preparation for the realities of consultant practice.
Education is a core priority within our department. RBWH ETC has built a reputation for maintaining a strong training culture and consistently supporting trainees to achieve success in both the ACEM Fellowship Written Examination and the OSCE examination.
Trainees benefit from:
· A high-quality formal education program specifically designed for senior Emergency Medicine trainees.
· Interactive teaching sessions that focus on clinical decision-making, exam preparation, critical care, trauma management, and consultant-level practice.
· A proven track record of exam success.
· Accessible and highly engaged consultant staff who are committed to trainee development and readily available to provide guidance, mentorship, and workplace-based assessments (WBAs).
Whether your goal is Fellowship success, developing confidence in managing complex patients, or refining your leadership skills within the Emergency Department, RBWH ETC provides the support and educational resources to help you succeed.
In addition to outstanding clinical experience, trainees are encouraged to broaden their professional development through a range of non-clinical opportunities. The department actively supports involvement in:
· Leadership and quality improvement initiatives.
· Research projects and clinical audits.
· Medical education activities, including teaching and educational program development.
· Departmental and hospital-wide committees and projects.
These opportunities allow trainees to strengthen their curriculum vitae while gaining experience in the broader professional skills expected of future Emergency Medicine consultants.
We recognise that senior trainees often need to balance work commitments with exam preparation, professional development, family responsibilities, and personal wellbeing. For this reason, we offer:
· Flexible rostering arrangements designed to support work-study balance.
· Negotiable working hours to accommodate individual circumstances.
For trainees looking to broaden their experience, RBWH ETC offers opportunities to undertake non-ED terms, including:
· Anaesthetics
· Intensive Care Medicine (ICU)
· Medical Education
· Geriatric Emergency Medicine
· Burns
These rotations provide valuable exposure to complementary specialties and allow trainees to develop skills that enhance their future Emergency Medicine practice.
A unique feature of the department is our Part 3 Program, specifically designed to support trainees who have completed Fellowship examinations and are preparing for the transition to consultant practice.
