Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a 230 bed level 5 facility on the Mid North Coast of NSW. The Emergency Department is a modern 34 bed ED with 3 resuscitation bays, dedicated paediatrics & fast track areas and an 8 bed short stay unit. It has a broad case mix, which includes approximately 25% paediatrics, and provides a regional trauma service.
The hospital has ACEM accreditation for 18 months of advanced training in EM (Tier 1 is expected from 2022) and is paediatric logbook approved. The hospital is the Base for the local network; employment opportunities extend to smaller district hospitals within the network.
Our education and training programme is supported by a highly motivated group of FACEMs with significant collective experience in ultrasound, prehospital and retrieval medicine, education, paediatrics, and trauma.
We offer 10 hours of paid and protected education sessions per fortnight. 2 hours of simulation training every fortnight is included, as are other in-house hands-on training programmes such as regular point-of-care ultrasound training sessions, a difficult airway course, emergency specific nerve block training and other critical care skills. We have a comprehensive ACEM exam preparation programme for both primary and fellowship. There are opportunities for terms in anaesthetics, ICU, paediatrics and an ultrasound special skills term.
Port Macquarie is a growing beachside town, popular with holidaymakers and surfers alike. It has a vibrant cafe and restaurant scene and there is easy access to the hinterland where hiking, fishing and wine tours are popular activities.
