Wonthaggi Hospital is the acute sub-regional hospital for Bass Coast Health (BCH). BCH provides health-care services to the Bass Coast Shire, incorporating the Gippsland South Coast Community including Phillip Island. BCH also includes the Health Hub at Cowes with outpatient consulting services and an Urgent Care Centre (UCC), Residential Aged Care Services at Griffiths Point Lodge, San Remo and Kirrak House, Wonthaggi and Community Care services based at San Remo and Inverloch.
Wonthaggi Hospital has a hybrid medical model of care with a mix of rural generalist GPs and specialist consultants, providing services to our ED, Acute medical and surgical wards, Sub-acute ward, Women’s Health service including maternity services, Haemodialysis, Ambulatory Medical Oncology – soon to be expanded and elective specialist surgery. There is no emergency surgery apart from Obstetrics.
We are seeking to attract Emergency Physicians who are looking to provide excellent emergency care to our rural community for a hands-on role in a busy Emergency Department (ED) at Wonthaggi Hospital. We are looking for a further 1.5 FTE to complete our FACEM roster and have an additional 0.75 sabbatical leave cover for 6 months commencing in April 2021.
Currently we operate an 8-bed ED with 4 short-stay beds and flexible ward beds for a further 4 short stay patients in the acute. The emergency department has annual presentations of around 17,000, expected rise to 26,000 within 5 years with an overall admission rate of approximately 25%. Paediatric presentations comprise approximately 20% but there are no inpatient paediatric services.
Access to inpatient beds is limited to low acuity general medical admissions under the care of our GPs, with overnight cover provided by ED. Transfers to other centres is our greatest challenge but initiatives like Victorian Stroke Telemedicine, Alfred Cardiology formal relationship, our eyeConnect device (Royal Victorian Eye and Ear), outreach support from the Alfred Intensive Care Unit, Adult Retrieval Victoria and PIPER all facilitate transport of patients to the most appropriate centre. Latrobe Regional Hospital Mental Health Service provide a 24/7 mental health referral hotline and on-site access for review and a soon to commence telehealth mental health review process. Key partnerships with Alfred and Monash Health have helped support on-site outpatient clinics.
Radiology and Pathology services are onsite 7 days a week with contracts with I-MED and Monash Pathology respectively. Not yet 24 hours but available for recall anytime out of hours, but soon to add MRI services in the latter half of 2021.
The ED has access to an iSTAT device 24/7 for more urgent but limited pathology investigations. The ED has its own bedside ultrasound complemented by a strong Emergency Medicine Ultrasound faculty all actively involved in education and research.
The ED will be rolling out an Electronic Health Record, Allscipts, in July 2021 to truly bring us into the 21st century.
Wonthaggi Hospital is undergoing a transformation and expansion of specialty services in medical and surgical disciplines. A $115 million grant from government will fund the first part of our hospital’s expansion including a contemporary 18 bed emergency department and 8 bed short-stay unit due to open in the second half of 2022.
