The cathedral city of Grafton is one of the oldest towns in NSW and administrative centre of the Clarence Valley, midway between Sydney and Brisbane. The Clarence is the largest river on the East Coast of Australia boasting the longest sections of whitewater in Australia descending from the mountains of the Great Dividing Range down to the idyllic beaches of the Yuragir National Park. The Clarence district has a population of 50 000. It is a picturesque and rural region.
Grafton Base Hospital is a level 3/4 hospital with 110 beds. The emergency department is accredited for registrar training by ACEM and is supported by inpatient general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and 6 bed ICU/HDU. Referrals are to the inpatient consultants. Other subspecialties are located at Lismore Base Hospital or Gold Coast University Hospital. The Emergency Department sees approximately 27 000 presentations annually and receives transfers from Maclean District Hospital emergency department that sees 13 000 patients per year.
The Emergency Department has a consultant/SMO presence from 0700 to midnight with on-call responsibility. The day shifts are staffed by a junior and middle grade for each consultant as well as a dedicated fast track doctor.
The position offered will involve working on the floor, alongside JMOs CMOs and registrars. The department is accredited for 6 months of ED training by ACEM as well as 6 months critical care/ICU. The successful applicant will be expected to be a proactive member of the training team. There is an active EMET program in the area with Grafton Base Hospital at its hub.
