Palmerston North Hospital is recruiting for Emergency Medicine Registrars.
Palmerston North is located in the southern half of the North Island of New Zealand, with a catchment population of 180,000. Our Emergency Department is accredited for 12 months of Advanced Training with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, and are Pediatric Log Book Accredited. MidCentral DHB have approved us to recruit 9 Registrar positions.
Our hospital is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma, non-bypass centre receiving approximately 48,000 ED presentations per annum, roughly 130/day (20% paeds). Palmerston North is located at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 3, and is the largest city in the Manawatu region. We see both blunt and penetrating trauma, admitting approximately 50 Trauma cases with ISS 15 or greater per year. We assess and manage the full spectrum of high acuity paediatric and adult medical and surgical patients. We are an increasingly busy department and have maintained a 30% admission rate for several years. We have access to all medical and surgical subspecialties with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery; patients requiring these services are transferred to Wellington.
Our Trainees have found they have a high rate of exposure to critical procedures compared to other large departments. You will also have access to excellent non-ED, accredited runs including…
• Anaesthetics – satisfies Critical Care component of Advanced Training
• ICU – 6 or 12 month rotations
Our consultant group have trained in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and the US; we currently have 11 full-time consultants and have recently been approved to recruit to 16. At this point, 8 of 11 SMOs are FACEMs, and this number increases yearly. All consultants have a strong commitment to education. We run weekly, protected registrar-led teaching sessions as well as regular critical incident, clinical radiology, and paediatric teaching. We also have monthly sessions in our simulation centre. We have an exceptionally high 1st time pass rate for the Part I exam, a track record we are committed to continuing. We also have good support for clinical research, with the dedicated personnel and desire to expand this aspect of our practice.
Our fellowship preparation program is well established, run by one of our FACEMs who very recently sat the new format exam. There is capacity for part-time work when you are preparing for ACEM examinations. There are dedicated and separate DEMT, WBA coordinator and Mentor roles with protected Clinical Support time.
As a department, we are committed to patient-centred care. We are looking for doctors with a team focus, excellent communication skills, and a clear commitment to emergency medicine.
Palmerston North offers a high quality of life outside the ED, with a range of quality accommodation options, very good retail services, the highest ratio of cafes and restaurants per head of population in New Zealand, and all without the hassle of traffic jams and long commutes. We have excellent opportunities for outdoor activity including mountain biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, every imaginable sports club and white sandy beaches on our doorstep. Within a couple of hours drive are two of New Zealand’s most highly regarded wine regions, and Wellington (the capital of NZ). Within 3 hours drive lie the ski slopes of Ruapehu, the outdoor mecca of the Central Plateau, and the ever popular tourist town of Lake Taupo.
