Emergency Registrar Critical Care Terms - Tamworth

Job Description

Are you an ACEM trainee looking for 6mths in Anaesthetics or ICU?

Tamworth Emergency is a Tier 1 training site that still has vacancies for 2026, including 6mths Anaes and 6mths ICU terms!

Are you worried about the level of support/supervision you will get once you cross the Great Dividing Range?

Don't be. We have a great team of local FACEMs who are on site between 0700 - midnight 7 days/week. Ask any trainee that's worked in Tamworth ED before and they will tell you what an interesting case-mix and supported learning opportunity it was. And if you don't know anyone that's worked in Tamworth before, just get in touch and we will pass on some contact details so you can suss it out for yourself.

Why Tamworth Hospital?

Tamworth is the regional referral centre for the New South Wales North West—an area geographically the same size as Tasmania, and serving a population well in excess of 200,000. The cost of rent and house prices, the cache of good schools, cafes and restaurants, together with an enthusiastic local sporting community makes Tamworth incredibly affordable and a great place to live. The virtues of country life are matched with world class critical care delivery at the hospital, overseen by FACEMs involved in the ED and the Retrieval Service.

Emergency Advanced Trainees will have access to 6 months of Anaesthetics, ICU and Retrieval Medicine. There are consultants on shift between 7.00am - 12.00am every day, with a pro-active and highly supportive on-call service overnight. The case-mix includes rural trauma, complex medical conditions, snake envenomations, critically ill children and late-presenting illness (country people are tough) - as well as the usual run-of-the-mill stuff. The Emergency Department sees in excess of 43,000 presentations per annum. 27% are paediatric presentations and a 25% admission rate.

We have a comprehensive education program with protected teaching days (10 hours of ED education per fortnight) with access to interdisciplinary SIMs on every education day. Affiliated with the University of Newcastle, we also have access to high fidelity SIM labs at their Tamworth Education Centre. We are known for our comprehensive Primary Exam Revision program and our Primary Exam Viva Course held twice a year as well as a highly successful Fellowship exam preparation package. Currently we are ACEM accredited as Tier 1 non major referral  as well as fulfilling the Paediatric Emergency Portfolio (PEP).

We are affiliated with the Network 4 ACEM accredited training network - which means you can transition smoothly through all the accredited training sites, which includes John Hunter, Maitland, Port Macquarie, Calvary Mater and Tamworth Hospitals if you wish. Or you can complete everything except your compulsory tertiary 6mths right here in Tamworth. Lay down some roots, get your children into excellent schooling, and know that at the end of your training there are opportunities for you as a new FACEM locally.

The breadth of case-mix and volume of high acuity patients, combined with working in a relatively small team, means you will get to see a lot, do a lot and learn a lot...all with close and supportive FACEM supervision. With flexible rostering, access to leave and a highly successful exam preparation programme, emergency training at Tamworth Hospital is truly the whole package. Come for one year and try it....and then you'll decide you want to stay!
