Become an RFDS Aeromedical Doctor

Join a highly skilled team delivering life-saving care from the sky. As an Aeromedical Doctor, you'll respond to emergencies and provide critical retrieval services using state-of-the-art aircraft set up like mobile intensive care units. From pre-hospital care to critical retrievals, every flight is an opportunity to use your clinical expertise to make a difference in patients’ lives while delivering high-level care in challenging environments.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Delivering urgent care via telehealth to patients in remote locations
• Performing emergency retrievals and inter-facility transfers with Retrieval Services Queensland (RSQ)
• Coordinating taskings with RSQ, Duty Tasking Officers, and health facilities
• Supporting nurses and allied health professionals with clinical advice
• Participating in quality improvement activities, including audits and case reviews
• Ensuring accurate and timely medical records
• Respecting and embracing the cultural values of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Our base locations

• Cairns (live in, local roles)
• Mount Isa & Charleville (live in, local roles & FIFO roles from Brisbane)

Rosters and flexibility

• Cairns: 2 days + 2 nights per 4-week roster (0.25 FTE, non-FIFO)
• Charleville and Mount Isa: 3 days + 3 nights + travel per 8-week roster (0.25 FTE, FIFO)
• Statewide Network Support: Fill short-term vacancies across bases (FIFO)

Who we’re looking for

We’re seeking Medical Officers with:

• AHPRA registration as a Medical Practitioner
• Fellowship with ACEM, ACRRM, ANZCA, CICM, or RACGP (Senior Registrars welcome)
• Minimum 5 years post-grad experience, including at least 6 months in:
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Anaesthetics
  • Intensive Care
• Additional experience in Paediatrics or Obstetrics is highly regarded
• Aeromedical experience is a bonus but not essential

All successful candidates must pass a pre-employment medical (including drug/alcohol screening), hold a valid driver’s licence, and be eligible for an ASIC card. Credentialing with RFDS and Queensland Health is required. Applications for Aeromedical roles will be reviewed in partnership with Queensland Health and RSQ.
