The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of the world's largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations. The RFDS in Queensland provides excellence in and access to primary health care and aeromedical services across the state. Our emergency retrieval service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, delivering the finest care to more than 330,000 Australians each year, that’s one person every two minutes! In addition to aeromedical retrievals of the critically ill or injured, the RFDS also delivers a broad range of essential primary and preventative healthcare services, including telehealth, mental health, oral health and health promotion.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) are currently seeking dedicated doctors interested in Aeromedical Retrieval and Telehealth roles to join our esteemed Cairns Base team. Established in 1972, the RFDS Cairns Base stands as one of the largest and longest-serving bases within our network.
As an RFDS Aeromedical Doctor you will provide lifesaving retrieval and pre-hospital medical services alongside highly respected aviation and flight nurse teams. In this role, you will:

Successful candidates may be subject to a pre-employment medical assessment and will be required to undertake drug and alcohol testing. Candidates are required to hold a current, unrestricted Australian driver's licence and obtain an ASIC Card. You will also be required to successfully complete the RFDS credentialing process. Prior to appointment you will be required to provide certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against VPD.

The RFDS employs over 600 people in Queensland with positions ranging from pilots, doctors, nurses, engineers, allied health professionals, and a variety of administration and support services roles including finance, marketing and human resources. With its Queensland head office located at the Brisbane Airport, the RFDS operates over 20 aircraft from nine operational bases located in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Charleville, Mount Isa, Longreach and Roma.
All RFDS bases in Queensland (except Longreach) provide an aeromedical retrieval service for emergencies. This includes the provision of direct primary responses as well as transport of patients between hospitals – known as inter-hospital transfers.
All aircraft are staffed with a Pilot, Flight Nurse and a Medical Officer if required. The aircraft are fully pressurised and configured to resemble mini-intensive care units. They are fitted with either a Lifeport or TAS system and a stretcher loading system that is fully compatible with road ambulance systems.
