St John of God Ballarat Hospital is one of Victoria’s largest regional private hospitals and offers an extensive range of acute services for the community. While the hospital has existed since the early 1900s, the facility has continually been expanded to ensure modern services, and equipment are available to meet the needs of the community. A redevelopment is currently underway at the hospital which will add a new 10-bed critical/intensive care unit, central sterile services department (CSSD), four operating theatres, a 30-bed inpatient ward, four additional operating theatres, and a new catheter lab.
We are seeking to employ a FACEM or an experienced Senior Medical Officer for the private Emergency Department which operates 24 hours, 7 days a week service. The Emergency Department has 13 acute treatment bays and is well equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including ultrasound and video laryngoscopy.
The ED manages approximately 16,000 presentations a year with the admission rate of about 33%. 15% of presentations are paediatric. ED acuity is mostly Category 2, 3 and 4 with very few Category 5 patients. The department is well supported by all the major craft groups and an interventional Cardiac Cath Lab, which deals with acute time critical ACS cases.
SJG Ballarat is a rural clinical school for final year University of Notre Dame medical students, and an academic position could be possible. The hospital is also part of the East Grampians Intern Training Program and has interns completing their general medicine and emergency rotations within the hospital.
This permanent position is a great opportunity for someone interested in shaping the long-term future of the ED, who has an interest in working and teaching in a hospital that enjoys a wonderful culture with a friendly environment.
Ballarat is a major historical town in Australia, with gold found in the town sparking the Victorian goldrush in the 1800s.
