Applications are invited from suitably qualified consultants for the position of Staff Specialist in Emergency Medicine with Maitland Hospital.

·        Maitland Hospital Emergency Department provides excellent opportunities to be actively involved in development of policies, models of care and clinical packages as well as education and support for ACEM trainees, nurse practitioners, GP/ruralist trainees and pre-vocational medical officers.

·        Maitland ED is a busy non-major Referral, Tier 2 site for ACEM training that sees 55,000 presentations per annum with an 18% admission rate and 24% of all presentations are pediatric.  It services a growing community and provides additional support to many of the smaller rural and remote sites in the Hunter Valley as a referral site and through the use of telehealth.

·        Expansion of services within the hospital have increased the variety and acuity of patients presenting to Maitland ED in recent years, seeing a wide range general medical, surgical, orthopedic, obstetric and paediatric cases. In addition to the case-mix, acuity and teaching opportunities available at Maitland, Staff Specialists from Maitland get firsthand experience of rural ED practice rotating out to work at Cessnock ED which is only 40min drive from our new Maitland Hospital and a 50 minute drive from Newcastle, located in the beautiful Hunter Valley. ·        Recently opened in January 2022 our new hospital is designed to continue meeting the growing health service needs for Maitland and the surrounding communities of the Hunter Valley, now and into the future.

·        Maitland Hospital has been built to provide patients with high quality care in a modern and comfortable environment and it embraces technology and innovation, allowing staff new, improved ways to work that will deliver better health outcomes. 

·        Maitland Hospital is located approximately 15 minutes from the Hunter Expressway, 25 minutes from John Hunter Hospital and central Newcastle and in close proximity to the New England Highway, other major link roads, an existing train station and public transport routes. 

·        Maitland and surrounding districts is a high population growth area, and the hospital is well placed to service the needs of growing communities locally and within our referral base.

·        An Emergency Short Stay Unit is planned to open in 2023.

 

Our ideal candidate:

·        Will have a primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine

·        Will provide care directly to patients in the ED and other emergency patients as required by the Director of Emergency Medicine

·        Will actively participate in Emergency Treatment Performance (ETP) ensuring ED patients are treated, discharged, admitted or referred from the ED within a defined time

·        Will be able to participate in an after-hours, on call weekend duty roster

·        Will have demonstrated experience in providing a high quality and efficient Emergency Department service

·        Will have demonstrated experience in an emergency department with significant Paediatric activity

·        Will have recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team

·        Will have experience in or knowledge of programs for improving the organisation and delivery of care in Emergency Medicine

·        Will be able to provide clinical leadership and direction to junior medical staff undergoing professional training in Emergency Medicine at different levels

·        Will have a commitment to patient safety and maintain involvement in Clinical Governance

·        Will be able to ensure effective communication relating to Emergency Medicine across the area including that of the referring practitioners, undergraduate and postgraduate medical and allied health programs, nursing and other HNELHD staff
