Te Whatu Ora/Health New Zealand
https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/ is responsible for the management of all health services across New Zealand including hospital and specialist services, primary health and community. This newly established entity has been developed to ensure consistency of care across all regions for all New Zealanders, with a focus on health equity.
Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury (previously known as South Canterbury District Health Board/DHB) is responsible for the delivery of services throughout the South Canterbury region based on local needs to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community. Timaru Hospital is formally classified as a Level 2 Hospital with 130 beds offering a range of surgical, medical, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric and mental health services. Despite (or maybe because) of our smaller size, we are considered to be a progressive Hospital, open to new ideas and distributive leadership giving clinicians a real opportunity to make change and improvements.
Emergency Department at Timaru Hospital
The department consists of 12-beds, covering a wide range of emergency presentations, including trauma, with backup from inpatient teams including anaesthesia, paediatrics, mental health, O&G, surgical and internal medicine specialists. The ED team is a tight-knit group, consisting of 6.7 FTE SMO's and a core of experienced and multi-skilled ED nurses.
Emergency Specialist role
Some flexibility of engagement can be considered, such as a Part-time commitment (eg 0.7FTE), or employment on a fixed-term basis is also an option we may consider for the right person, (such as someone seeking a working holiday/sabbatical placement type arrangement). Basically, please talk to us about your preference.
The roster consists of three overlapping nine-hour shifts, (plus some degree of House Officer assistance). Considerable efforts are made to accommodate individual preferences while rostering.
A major advantage here is the roster has NO night shift and NO afterhours 'on call' requirement and typically operates on a si-week cycle, thereby allowing some degree of predictability for planning one's personal commitments and interests.
Successful applicants will be offered a position based on the DHB/ASMS MECA terms and conditions, including a generous CME allowance. South Canterbury has strong links with the University of Otago School of Medicine with opportunities for SMOs to become involved as Clinical Supervisors.
Living in South Canterbury
South Canterbury offers a lifestyle opportunity second to none: this is an easy place to live, family friendly, known to have one of the lowest crime rates in NZ, with instant access to an astounding array of outdoor activities - one of New Zealand's top ten rated beaches, a number of ski fields with both learner and advanced slopes, lakes and mountains - (the iconic 'McKenzie Country' is on our doorstep).
When it comes to public amenities you are spoilt for choice with multiple golf courses, modern aquatic/gym facility and an excellent array of sporting venues.
The climate is great: hot summers, crisp winters, there is no such thing as a long commute to work, great properties, including lifestyle blocks, are still relatively affordable by NZ standards and primary and secondary educational facilities are superb with two internationally renowned Universities within two hours' drive.
