Job Description

Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Exeter, UK

Registrar and SHOs in Emergency Medicine

Would you like 6 months ACEM accredited training based in the UK?  Would you like to work in one of the most highly rated UK training departments as judged by trainees?   Would you like to be based in the sunny and ever popular South West of England?  The Royal Devon and Exeter Emergency Department would like to invite you to be part of a team that prides itself on a great work life balance.

Right in the middle of the UKs most popular holiday region, here at Exeter we are a stone’s throw from many of the UKs best beachs, rivers and hills.  There is easy access to fantastic surfing, kayaking, climbing, kite boarding, windsurfing, biking and coasteering, with organised skiing and plenty for those who want to go at a slower pace with varied walking, camping and fishing.  Exeter punches above its weight, and has the cultural amenities you would expect from a famous historical centre with a large internationally renowned University.  Also well connected to the rest of the UK and Europe, from Exeter you have easy access to Bristol (1 hour), London (2.5hrs) and beyond.

So, the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Eastern Services, is currently inviting applicants to join our team of Registrars and Speciality Middle-grade doctors in the expanding Emergency Department at Exeter.   SHO applications are also encouraged.  Start dates are negotiable.

We are building our Senior and Junior Middle Grade team with a focus on developing sustainable working practices. Our basic job plans comprise an attractive 40 hours a week inclusive of SPA time and we have a range of posts available suited to individual interests. Our team comprises clinicians with subspecialty interest in Paediatrics, PHEM, PEM, Research, CESR, Environmental Sustainability, Extreme Medicine, Sports Medicine and much more. Discussion around Fellowship posts or other individualised job plans to support professional development, academic work or outside interests are welcomed. We have a strong track record in delivering CESR, MSc in Extreme Medicine, welcoming International Medical Graduates and providing accredited time for FACEM training.

The Emergency Department is a modern progressive department and Trauma Unit supported by a dedicated team of 20 Consultant Emergency Physicians providing shop floor leadership from 0800 – 2300 hours, 365 days a year.  Our Medical staffing model enjoys round the clock middle grade cover, a 21 person junior doctor rota, with 3 SHOs overnight and is supported by a team of Emergency Nurse Practitioners. We are currently in the final phases of a rebuild providing a new 8 bay Resuscitation Area, upgraded Majors and Minors spaces and a separate area for Children.  This recent investment both in terms of process and resource aims to provide a productive and rewarding work environment.

There is an excellent Departmental Educational Programme for Junior and Middle Grade Doctors and any successful candidate would be encouraged to undertake Quality Improvement activities.  Job Planned time is provided for this, both in terms of supporting professional activities and time for clinical administration.  We have an Academic Department of Emergency Medicine involved in a number of local and national research projects offering our team experience in recruiting to trials and working in a research environment.

Interested applicants should contact Dr Andy Ketchin or Dr Steve Fordham (01392 403385 or [email protected]) or Abbie Forbes (01392 402189) for an informal discussion.

Please note that we can only accept applicants from candidates who are eligible for registration with the General Medical Council.   All applicants must be in possession of the essential qualifications for the post, as set out in the person specification, by the closing date and in possession of the previous experience requirement within three months of the closing date.

In submitting an application you authorise the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to confirm any previous NHS service details via the Electronic Staff Record Inter Authority Transfer process, should you be appointed to the post.
