Job Description

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of the world's largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations. The RFDS in Queensland provides excellence in and access to primary health care and aeromedical services across the state. Our emergency retrieval service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, delivering the finest care to more than 330,000 Australians each year, that’s one person every two minutes! In addition to aeromedical retrievals of the critically ill or injured, the RFDS also delivers a broad range of essential primary and preventative healthcare services, including telehealth, mental health, oral health and health promotion.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the people of Queensland, RFDS will provide additional medical resources in the Bundaberg area in 2023. Through these medical resources, we will be able to offer more comprehensive medical treatment to Queenslanders in and around Bundaberg.

For those interested in joining the RFDS Bundaberg team, we are currently seeking expressions of interest. In this newly developed role, you will;

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an RFDS Flight Nurse & Pilot to perform Retrieval Services Queensland (RSQ) taskings including- emergency retrievals and inter-facility transfers
  • Liaise with RSQ, Duty Tasking Officers and referring/receiving facilities to coordinate aeromedical retrievals
  • Conduct handovers to care providers
  • Provide advice to nurses and other health professionals- as required
  • Participate in quality improvement activities such as clinical audits and case reviews
  • Maintain accurate medical records
  • Contribute to the overall strategic goals of the RFDS (QLD Section)
  • Respect cultural diversity including the traditional Indigenous view of health

 

Medical Officers in Bundaberg will work Monday through Thursday, day shifts, and work an ongoing rotating roster every 8 weeks (0.16 FTE). It is our goal to accommodate your preferred travel preference, whether you drive in and out or fly in and out. In addition, you will receive a half-day paid travel to and from Bundaberg. RFDS will provide you with accommodation and reasonable use of a vehicle while you are on the roster.

Who are we looking for?

RFDS is looking for Medical Officers to
provide evidence-based, best-practice emergency medicine in primary scene response and interfacility transfers throughout Queensland. It is essential that you meet the following criteria-

  • Registration with AHPRA as Medical Practitioner
  • Fellowship of ACEM, RACGP, ACRRM, ANZCA or CICM (Senior Registrars are encouraged to apply)
  • Sufficient experience in critical care medicine to meet credentialing requirements with QLD Health (Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Paediatrics)
  • Previous experience in Aeromedical Retrieval is ideal but is not a requirement

  
RFDS Bundaberg Base

 

Since 2002, RFDS Bundaberg Base has been providing emergency retrieval and inter-hospital transfer services. The new Bundaberg Aeromedical Base opened in 2020 with a patient transfer facility that provides comfortable, clinical care for patients. Patients are flown with conditions ranging from cardiac issues and serious injuries to the transfer of expectant mothers and infants to specialist care in Brisbane. In Bundaberg, you will work with a highly skilled team of nurses, pilots, and support staff in a busy, friendly, and dynamic environment.

In order to assess your suitability, experience and qualifications for the role that you are applying for, your application will be reviewed by a representative from Queensland Health and RSQ.

  
Successful candidates may be subject to a pre-employment medical assessment and will be required to undertake drug and alcohol testing.  Candidates are required to hold a current, unrestricted Australian driver's licence and obtain an ASIC Card.  You will also be required to successfully complete the RFDS credentialing process. Prior to the appointment, you will be required to provide certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against VPD.
