Flinders Medical Centre Emergency Department is a tertiary ED, seeing both adults and paediatrics. It is one of 2 trauma centres for the state and the dedicated obstetric trauma centre. We see on average 90,000 presentations per year, with an admission rate of 40 to 45%. 20% of presentations are paediatrics. All specialties except burns are represented.
Flinders ED is a major referral centre and accredited with ACEM for 2 years of advanced training and meets paediatric logbook requirements. As part of Advanced ACEM training, rotations to medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, anaesthetics, ICU and Alice Springs ED are available as well as our regional campus, Noarlunga Hospital which is accredited for 6 months urban district.
There is a well established protected trainee teaching programme as well as separate Primary and Fellowship programmes. The emergency department is staffed by 22 FTE FACEMs who provide seven day per week cover, 0800 until 2400 and on call after midnight.
