A career with Grampians Health means you are connected and are part of a team providing quality healthcare to rural and regional communities.

About the role
Ballarat Health Services is a major training site for the University of Melbourne and Deakin Rural Clinical Schools and senior staff are strongly committed to teaching and the professional development of Interns, HMOs and Registrars.  Ballarat Health Services Emergency Department (ED) is currently recruiting for the 2022/2023 Clinical Year. These positions have been redesigned to better provide a clear pathway either into Emergency training, or the GP training program for our region. The department offers assistance and support in gaining the Diploma and/or the Certificate in Emergency Medicine. BHS ED is accredited for 24 months training with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), and is undertaking the process of reviewing to extend this to 36 months.

2022 Emergency Department

Registrar / DIT positions (PGY4+) Emergency/ICU/Anaesthetics – designed to suit ACEM and GP trainees

Hospital Medical Officer positions (PGY2+) Emergency/Short Stay Unit

We are looking for doctors who have a team focus, exceptional communication skills and a desire to learn emergency medicine skills in a regional setting. The department places a high priority on patient centred care and a supportive team environment. Candidates will ideally have registration with ACEM and/or a strong interest in Emergency Medicine.

The ED has experienced strong growth in recent years with patient attendances increasing to around 60,000 presentations annually. Growth in absolute patient numbers has slowed in the last 2-3 years however, there has been significant increase in ATS Category 2 and 3 patients. This is reflected in an admission rate that is also climbing (currently 26-27%). Paediatric presentations account for approximately 28% of attendances; candidates will be able to meet paediatric logbook requirements. We also have a 12 bed short stay unit attached to the ED.

The department has a culture of supervision and support for junior medical staff. This includes proactive training for HMO and registrar groups, protected weekly training sessions, multi-disciplinary M&M and a responsive positive feedback program.

12 or 24 month positions of 76/86 hours per fortnight are available for those who meet key selection criteria.  Priority for external rotations is given to trainees of ACEM based on training requirements, department staffing requirements and individual preferences.

·         Candidates will be required to be eligible for Provisional Registration with APRHA. IMG applicants who are required to sit the AMC exams must have successfully completed both the written and clinical components.

·         MMBS

·         Minimum 3 years post graduate experience

·         ACEM trainee or a minimum of two years emergency medicine experience
