This is an exciting opportunity for ACEM trainees to work at WAs largest mixed adult and paediatric tertiary Emergency Department (ED). Since opening in February 2015, the ED has developed into an extremely high functioning unit with activity of >110,000 patients/year making it one of the busiest emergency departments not only in the state, but across Australia.
Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is a 783-bed mixed adult, paediatric and neonate quaternary facility situated only 15 minutes from the Perth CBD. FSH is home to many sub-specialities including advanced heart and lung, renal, obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiothoracics, burns, hyperbaric and mental health resulting in a broad case-mix of complex patients within the ED.
The ED has 70 beds including a 15-bed resuscitation area and 19 short-stay beds. It features separate entries, triage and treatment areas for adult and paediatric patients. 25 per cent of the patient load is paediatrics, providing an excellent opportunity for paediatric skill development.
The department is ACEM accredited for 2 years of Advanced Training. FSH ED has comprehensive first and second part teaching programs, and has seen excellent results in first part and fellowship examinations.
Trainee Registrars have access to rotations in anaesthetics, ICU, hyperbaric medicine, acute general medicine, general paediatrics, and a nearby private Emergency department.
Trainees also have opportunities for special skill posts and training in education, simulation, toxicology, ED geriatrics, research and ED ultrasound.
Wherever possible, part-time employment is facilitated for those who would ideally like part time positions.
