Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is the major health provider in the Central Hume region with an extensive range of acute, sub-acute, aged care and community services. NHW is currently undertaking a major redevelopment, increasing its Emergency Department capacity and is seeking to develop and expend the Emergency Department Medical Workforce.

The primary purpose of this position is to develop and build our Emergency Medicine skillset and capability within NHW, specifically to:

1. To provide specialist emergency medicine services to patients of NHW
2. To participate in the education of medical, nursing and allied health students
3. To supervise medical staff in Emergency Medicine

NHW is a growing regional service with 208 beds and is the major referral facility for the greater part of Northeast Victoria. Our Emergency Department sees an increasing number of presentations, with an average of 80-110 per day (26,000 presentations per year). There is a wide variety of presentations including trauma and resuscitation to less urgent presentations. Approximately 25% of our presentations are paediatrics.

The Emergency Department interfaces with Internal Medicine, Critical Care Unit (including ICU, HDU and CCU beds), General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Geriatrics/Rehabilitation, Medical Oncology, and Mental Health services.

The service contributes to undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and to nursing and allied health education. There is a particular responsibility to provide a supportive and stimulating educational experience for medical students and early postgraduate medical and nursing graduates.

The Emergency Physician is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day clinical operation of the Emergency Department delivers effective and safe high-quality patient care and to assist with change management within the Emergency Department to achieve ongoing improvement and delivery of safe, consistent, responsive and high-quality services.

The organisational structure encompasses a CDES, FACEM –Emergency Physician, Emergency Senior Doctor in Charge, Junior Medical staff and Interns.
